1825 Lower Canada (Quebec) Census

I found the 1825 Census for Eardley Township, where Truman Waller, and several other family members are living.  No Martin Ebert found yet, but Clarendon Township is not on this record, at least not as of 1 June, 2012.  The 1825 census for Clarendon may not exist, it will need further investigation.

Following is the link for Truman Waller:

The following information is my interpretation of the census.

1842 Lower Canada (Quebec) Census available at familysearch.org

The 1842 Lower Canada (Quebec) Census is now available at familysearch.org.  It has been indexed, and you can see the actual images.  I have tried searching using the index, and I also searched page by page the images of Ottawa County for Clarendon, Hull, Eardley, and Litchfield townships.  The census only has the head of household, but it gives the number of people living in the household, plus it breaks it down to ages and sex, so there are at least some clues to help ascertain if it is the correct family.

I looked for Martin Ebert and Truman Waller, and did not find them.  As they and their wives are older, they may be included in another household.  Both of these couples died after the 1842 Census was taken so should be there.  I have found several of "our" family.
John Ebert, Thomas Kelly, Charles Thomas, Lydia Lebeau(Lebau), some Murphy's, Noah Holt, Martin Moore, etc.

Each census entry has 4 pages of information to go through.  As of today, I have only looked for the names.  I will list some of the names (click on the link to go directly to the image).  I have NOT searched for all of the possible descendants of the Ebert and Waller families, so if anyone else finds something I would love to hear from you.  If any of the links don't work, let me know.

Truman Waller in 1790 US Census

I tried to find Truman Waller in the 1790 US census at familysearch.org, and of course it was transcribed incorrectly!!!!!
At the present time, we cannot make corrections.  I have written to familysearch before, and all they tell me is to keep track of any mistakes I find at familysearch.org, and eventually (don't hold your breath) we will be able to add corrections or at least different opinions.

If you look for 'Freeman Waller' the link will come up, however, the place, Columbia County has been added, instead of Washington County.  the next page of the actual record has Columbia County in big letters, so someone has mistakenly used Columbia and not Washington as the place!!!

Below is the link to the actual census for Truman Waller (to view this record, you need a familysearch.org account, which is free.  It will prompt you to sign up for a familysearch account if you don't already have one. The ancestry.com link is NOT free.  It is worthwhile to have a familysearch.org account, as it lets you access more info on some of the records, also, you will need this account to access the Family Tree feature on the website when it becomes available later this year.)

John Ebert in 1790 US Census for Albany County, New York

I have talked about John Ebert and his family who lived in Berne, Albany County, New York before.  I have just found an easy link to the 1790 US census image for his family.  The records can be found at familysearch.org.  The link below will take you to the actual image of the census when it was written in 1790 (not a transcription!).

1790 US Census for John Ebert of Rensselaerville, Albany, New York

The records, including images, for US census 1790 to 1840 were added 2 February, 2012.  I have not looked at all of these records, but plan to in the next few weeks.  They are indexed.  Enjoy.

Using wildcards for searching online databases

I have not found anything new on the Ebert line.  While I was cleaning out my old e-mails, I came across a few I needed to answer.  If I have neglected to answer anyone else, please e-mail me again, with a reminder.  The little gray cells, they ain't what they used to be!

Most of you probably already know what I am about to tell you.  If not, good luck with these tips.

Using Wild Cards when searching indexed databases

an asterisk  * replaces multiple letters
a question mark ? replaces one letter

I have used wild cards while searching in familysearch.org and ancestry.com and have had good results.  Other databases may have different results, it depends on how the searches are executed.

Often, I have had problems finding records because they have been transcribed incorrectly (sometimes through no fault of the transcriber!)
Especially when the first letter of a name is mis-transcribed.  For example, I have Tighe ancestors.  Sometimes spelled Tigh, Tye, Tie.
Soundex will usually pick up these spellings.  However, no search will pick up Lighe!  so if I use ?ighe, the search will pick up all the possible names ending with 'ighe'.  I could also use *ighe, but that will pick up multiple and single letters at the beginning of the name.

more examples:
Kel*y,  for Kelly, Kelley,
Edw*  for Edward, Edwin, Edwart, etc.
Wal?er  for Waller
E*bert, E*ert, ?bert, *bert, for Ebert

I believe you need to have 3 letters plus the wildcard for the search to work. The wildcard can be at the beginning, middle, or end of a name. Wildcards can be used for searching given names and for surnames.

I hope this has helped someone out there, stay warm.  It was -40 Celsius with the windchill factor this morning at my house!

New York (State) Probate records now on-line

Some of the New York Probate records are now on-line at familysearch.org.  To access them:
familysearch.org
scroll down to USA, Canada, Mexico (left click)
(wait for it to load completely, then left click on United States in the Place category)
(again wait for it to load and then scroll down to  New York, Probate Records, 1629-1971 and left click)
you may then click on 'learn more' to learn more about this database, or
click on 'Browse through 1,630,900 images'  which then brings up a list of New York counties.

I have looked through some of these records, and unfortunately, have not found any Ebert/Ebert/Everts from the Berne area of Albany, New York.  I did find a will for Jehoeakim Barkly, of Berne, Albany.  I believe he is the Joachim Buercklin/Barckley/Barkly, etc. who married Catharina Oosterman.  He was enumerated in the 1790 US census close to John Ebert (who is possibly our ancestor).
Will for Jehoeakim Barkly reference follows:
New York, Probate Records, 1629-1971 (at familysearch.org)
    Albany (County)
    Wills, 1802-1817, v. 3-4  (Collection)
Image 510 of 599  (image page number) this should get you to the actual image of the will
or
link which I think should take you to the actual image:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-24569-5301-74?cc=1920234&wc=13662666
or
Will of Jehoeakim Barkly 1814 of Berne, Albany, New York

I include this record just for an example of what a will might contain.  I do not, at this time, believe the Barkley family is related to us.

I hope the above info is understandable.  These records are not indexed, but it saved me ordering numerous films from Salt Lake City by being able to access them at home on my computer.  Once I became familiar with how these records were organized, it became easier to find the info I wanted.

So far I have checked Albany County for Ebert(none found), Howard(none found), Barkley(some found), Evertse/Evertsen(some found).
Washington County for Waller (some found, no direct ancestors), Hitchcock (some found, no direct ancestors)
Oneida County for Ebert (none found), Butterfield (none found).

following is a link to an article about Churches in Berne, Albany, New York.  It explains why a family may have
children christened in different places, and even different religions (Lutheran or Dutch Reformed), while the
family was supposedly living in Berne.  I have not found any Methodist or Congregational Church records,
which is possibly where the Butterfield's and Ebert's may have worshiped.

Happy New Year
