Truman Waller 1802 census

I am excited.  People are actually reading this blog.  Welcome cousin Sean.  He wrote:
Carol,
I'm researching this line and have been trying to find evidence of Roxy Waller having been the daughter of Truman Waller. Based on various circumstantial data, the link sure looks good, but I wonder if you've seen anything definitive like a census, marriage or other record linking the two.
Thanks,
Sean J.

I hope what I post today answers Sean's questions.  This is why I started the blog, to get together with cousins to try and help find answers.
Yes, I have several census records for Truman Waller and family.  Following are just some of the notes I have for Truman Waller:

I think Truman was probably born in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut and not in Danbury
(Truman possibly gave Danbury as birth because it was close to where he was born
and was a recognizable name--Kent had several names and jurisdictions over the years, including
Woodbury, New Preston, Washington, Kent)

applied for a pension in 1845 at Hull, PQ for NY and VT service in the
revolution ... it was allowed.

In Marlborough township, Grenville (later Carleton County), Ontario, Canada in 1802 :  Truman, Patty, Eder, Eliad, Roxy, Eunice,  Maudana, Matilda, Oronda
this information came from the internet (2007) http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=769014
from website Our Roots,  from the book "History of Leeds and Grenville"

(because of the above record I thought I had solved the puzzle of the unknown daughter's name,
it seems to indicate that Oronda and Matilda are two different people.
I found another record of the census and it contradicts that assumption)

Marlborough Township, Grenville (later Carleton) County, Ontario 1802 Census:
Waller    Trueman      M       42   (Truman)
Polly             F        41   (should be Patty)
                Edar              M      20
                Elias              M      15
                Roxy             F        12  (my ancestor )
                Eunice          F          8
                Mandana     F          4
Orenda Matilda  F   .25  (probably means 4 months old)

another online index of the 1802 census is different:
Marlborough     63     Waller     Trueman 42
Marlborough     63     Waller     Polly     41
Marlborough     63     Waller     Edar     20
Marlborough     63     Waller     Elias     15
Marlborough     63     Waller     Roxy     12
Marlborough     63     Waller     Eunice     8
Marlborough     63     Waller     Mandana 6
Marlborough     63     Waller     Axy     4
Marlborough     63     Waller     Orenda Matilda     0.25

Truman Waller and family are not found in the 1804, 1805, or later census for Marlborough
There is mention in Philemon Wright's first account book of Truman Waller in 1803, so
Truman and family had probably moved to Hull, Quebec soon after the 1802 census of Marlborough

1808
signature for petition for a school house (looks like he signed for sons Eder and Eliud, also)

Is possibly the Freeman (spelling error) Waller who is recorded in Hampton Town,  Washington
County, New York in the 1790 census.  Yes, I checked the original hand-written census and it is
Truman, not Freeman

Military Records:
Name spelled Trueman Waller.  He served from the State of Vermont in the Revolutionary War in 1780.
He was a private with Captain Hutchins Company.

father possibly Samuel Waller--pension application says father is Samuel
brothers include Joseph and Eli Waller (pension application)
sister Eunice Turner (pension application)

Hope this information helps.  I have asked 'Santa' for instructions on how to blog more effectively.  This technology is amazing, and would be more amazing if I actually knew what I was doing!

Merry Christmas

  1. Carol,

Super awesome!! I had most of the particulars you mentioned, but definitely not the census of 1802 or 1790. That's really amazing. I actually just got all of the pension materials yesterday. I was at the DAR library in Washington DC and chatting with one the librarians about source data and she asked me if I had looked on Fold3. I had never heard of it - some great military records there. Some of the pension correspondence is very hard to read!

Anyway, your blog is great - I think you're doing just fine as you are. Just keep writing!

    Many thanks cousin!

  2. Hi Carol and Sean - do you two still follow this blog? I am somehow related, through Truman's daughter Roxanne and her line. Would love to hear from one or both of you!
